LOCATION: KODIAK ALASKA

ONE OF ALASKA’S PREMIER COMBO HUNT LOCATIONS

KODIAK ALASKA DUCKS AND FISHING!

DESTINATION OVERVIEW:

The Kodiak Island Archipelago is about 177 miles long and encompasses nearly 5,000 square miles. At 3,588 square miles, Kodiak Island is the largest in the group. Two-thirds of the island consists of the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge.  Close to 3,500 giant Kodiak brown bears make their home here, along with Sitka black-tailed deer, fox, mountain goats, reindeer, Roosevelt elk, Stellar sea lions, sea ducks, numerous whale species, salmon, crab and halibut.

Kodiak is home to numerous prized trophy sea ducks. Our UWC Adventures partner in Kodiak understands that we are collectors and does his best to maximize the number and quality of species hunters will harvest!

THE HUNT:

Our partner specializes in collecting trophy birds in prime plumage for the discriminating collector.  Because of this commitment, he starts hunting sea ducks in late November.

The Outfitter is dedicated to providing a hunt tailored to your specific needs. They diligently scout and are prepared to adapt their hunt strategies and tactics to meet your goals and objectives best. This flexibility ensures that your hunting experience is exactly what you desire.

While Alaska waterfowl limits are generous, we prioritize conservation in our hunting practices. We prefer to switch species once a mountable bird or two has been harvested.  For instance, if you wish to mount two Drake Harlequins, we will hunt until you have two mature, prime Drake Harlequins and switch our focus to another species you choose.  This approach helps you achieve your personal goals and ensures the health of local bird populations for future successful hunts.

Sea duck hunting on Kodiak Island is primarily done using decoys from shore blinds, decoys in blind boats, layout boats, or sculling.

We prioritize safety during our hunts, ensuring all hunters are equipped with [specific safety equipment or measures]. Because we are hunting on saltwater, the shoreline always changes with the tides, giving us countless locations to set up for a shoot.

Sculling, a technique similar to spot and stalk big game trophy hunting, requires precision and skill.  It allows the hunter to pick out a single, mature trophy bird from a distance, then slip in quietly and take it from close range, a challenge only the most skilled hunters can master.

The northern proximity and lateness of hunting in December and January limit shooting times to about 7 hours daily. We begin days with a home-cooked breakfast between 6:00 am and 6:30 am.  We typically launch the boat by 8:00 am, depending on how far we must run to get into birds and whether we are setting decoys or scull hunting.   Shooting light varies between 9:00 am and 10:00 am during the winter months.

UWC-Adventures clients have the option of one guide per one hunter or one guide per two hunters.  Our partner is set up to accommodate groups of up to 6 hunters, and we do not mix parties unless this is communicated with and agreed upon by both parties before the hunt.

ACCOMMODATIONS AND CUISINE:

The lodge for the 2024 season is a unique triplex setup, offering personal living space and bedrooms for each group. With a communal entry, hot showers, washers/dryers, boot dryers, and Wi-Fi, the lodge is designed to provide you with all the comforts of home during your wilderness adventure.

You will dine on hearty homestyle cooking and a culinary adventure with an Alaskan flare.  Imagine waking up to the aroma of bacon or sausage, eggs, and toast, accompanied by a steaming cup of hot coffee.  Lunches are a delightful mix of lunch meat, cheese, and bagel sandwiches, with plenty of granola bars and candy bars to energize you and your hot beverage throughout the day.  You might indulge in grilled bison steaks, fresh crab, halibut, or tuna steaks with green salad, potatoes, or pasta for dinner.

The limited daylight in December and January allows you to retire to bed anytime after dinner, ensuring you get plenty of rest to prepare for the following day’s hunt.

While we understand the enjoyment that a drink can add to your experience, we want to inform you that alcohol is not included in the price of the hunt. However, it is readily available from various stores in Kodiak, allowing you to plan and prepare accordingly.
